Green industrial areas

Boden Industrial Park is a 550-hectare industrial zone – larger than the island of Kungsholmen in central Stockholm and equivalent to more than 1,000 football fields.

The area offers abundant renewable electricity and close access to existing infrastructure, creating unique conditions for land-intensive industries that are driving the green industrial transition forward.

This is where Stegra is building the world’s first full-scale green steel plant, which, once completed, is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 95 percent compared to traditional blast-furnace steelmaking. The site will also host Europe’s largest hydrogen facility.

Boden Industrial Park additionally provides optimal conditions for large-scale greenhouse cultivation and other activities that strengthen the region’s self-sufficiency.

In early 2026, the new railway connection will be completed, linking the area to the national mainline and further out into the world.

Today, Boden Industrial Park is Sweden’s largest industrial area and one of our three major green industrial zones where we are shaping the circular Boden of the future.

Green hydrogen hub

Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the global climate transition. In Boden, Stegra is building the world’s largest green hydrogen production facility. There are also large amounts of renewable electricity in the nearby area. Boden is therefore identified as a hub for the green hydrogen network in the northern Nordic region.

People of the heart of the transition

The societal transformation cannot happen without people. In Boden, the skills of the future are being developed through Lärcentrum, Boden Business Park, and new collaborations between industry and education. Here, a human green heart is taking shape — a place where life, work, and sustainability go hand in hand.

Steel production accounts for 25 percent of the European industry’s carbon dioxide emissions. In total, it emits more CO₂ than all the Nordic countries combined – or more than all flights departing from Europe. To meet Swedish and European climate targets, the steel industry must transition to more sustainable methods, and new technology now makes this possible.

Stegra is developing a fully integrated, digitalized, and sustainable production facility for green steel and green hydrogen in Boden. By using green hydrogen in the steelmaking process, the facility will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95 percent compared to traditional steel production. Once operational, it is expected to have an annual production capacity of 5 million tonnes of high-quality green steel and employ around 2,000 people by 2030.
