H2 Green Steel Builds Large-Scale Fossil-Free Steel Production in Boden–Luleå

The company H2 Green Steel (H2GS AB) and the Municipality of Boden have signed a letter of intent for the acquisition of a 500-hectare land area in Norra Svartbyn, SIP (Svartbyn Industrial Park). The aim is to create a unique integrated industrial park where hydrogen-based green energy will be used to produce fossil-free green steel.

The plans for the development of the area just north of Boden are now being made public by the current landowner, the Municipality of Boden, together with H2 Green Steel (H2GS AB). The project means that Boden and Luleå are becoming highly active and driving partners in one of the largest investments and transformations in Sweden’s industrial history.

“We in Boden are very pleased that H2 Green Steel’s establishment is now becoming a reality. We have worked with them for a long time on this establishment, and the cooperation has been excellent. Together, we are now showing the way into a new phase of the green industrial revolution, and what will take shape here in Boden will be truly unique,” says Claes Nordmark, Mayor of Boden.

“By investing in fossil-free green steel, we are creating a more sustainable society and contributing to the development of our region. We will now mobilize the expertise available in the surrounding area. Being able to contribute together with Luleå to the revolution of Swedish steel production feels extremely exciting,” says Claes Nordmark.

“This is the biggest thing that has happened in Boden since the construction of Boden Fortress in the early 1900s, and it will change Boden, Luleå, and Norrbotten forever,” says Claes Nordmark, Mayor of Boden.

Writing Swedish History

The fully integrated production process includes one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen plants, paving the way for the production of green quality steel. Hydrogen technology is the part of the climate-smart production solution that will replace traditional blast-furnace technology, which is associated with large carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The establishment in Svartbyn Industrial Park will create entirely new conditions for meeting and accelerating the global climate transition. Steel production is expected to begin as early as 2024.

“This is a historic Swedish industrial investment that will fundamentally transform the European steel industry and play a decisive role in the climate transition. We are incredibly pleased to carry out this initiative specifically in Boden and Luleå, and I would like to warmly thank the municipal leaderships for excellent cooperation, which now continues. We share the vision of developing Norrbotten into a world-leading knowledge cluster for fossil-free steelmaking. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter,” says Carl-Erik Lagercrantz, Chair of the Board at H2 Green Steel.

H2 Green Steel (H2GS AB) was founded in 2020 to build large-scale fossil-free steel production in Norrbotten. The company aims to produce 5 million tonnes of fossil-free steel by 2030, thereby contributing to the climate transition of the European steel industry, one of the sectors with the highest carbon emissions. H2 Green Steel will establish its operations in the Boden–Luleå region. The founder and largest owner is Vargas, which is also a co-founder and one of the largest owners of Northvolt.
