Plan for contractor housing in Boden

The municipality aims to enable accommodation for 3,000 contractors. Here is the plan for how housing could be distributed across the designated areas.

With the framework agreement between H2 Green Steel and Boden Municipality in place, work is now underway to design contractor housing in the identified locations.

H2 Green Steel will develop proposals for each site. Once proposals are ready, a rental agreement (land lease agreement) will be signed for each sub-area. As reported earlier, this process will be preceded by dialogue between the municipality, the company, and the police authority.

The final step before construction begins is for H2 Green Steel to apply for a temporary building permit for the accommodation.

“Only then will it be possible to give an exact figure on how many contractor homes will be available and when they will be in place,” says Johan Larsson, Project Manager for Contractor Housing in Boden.

Boden Municipality has a clear goal of enabling 3,000 contractor homes. A study has identified suitable land areas to make this possible, resulting in five main areas and nine sub-areas with capacity for between 2,500 and 3,500 residents.

“The signals we are getting indicate that the need for temporary housing will be even greater. But this initiative will hopefully relieve pressure on Boden’s existing housing market and create safe, pleasant accommodation for contractors,” says Johan Larsson.

Why the housing is spread across the municipality

The decision to distribute contractor housing throughout the municipality is based on experiences from Skellefteå and the mining regions. Locating housing near existing residential areas increases opportunities for integration with the wider community, as these areas often already have recreational facilities and planned public transport.

Part of the Contractor Housing project is also about connecting contractors and stakeholders with each other and with H2 Green Steel. The company will hire subcontractors and suppliers to build and operate the housing. If contracts are awarded to companies outside the county, the project team will work to link them with local businesses.

“We can already see interest from our local business community, both to work directly with H2 Green Steel and to launch their own housing initiatives. That’s fantastic news and great for Boden,” says Johan Larsson.
