Construction begins on H2 Green Steel’s contractor housing in Boden

Work has now started on the first site for temporary contractor housing in Boden. Building permits have gained legal force for three areas, and today the first machines rolled in at Nylandsbäcken.

During the autumn, Boden Municipality’s Environmental and Building Committee granted temporary building permits for H2 Green Steel’s first three contractor housing areas in Boden—Prästholmen, Nylandsbäcken, and Slipvägen 1. With all permits now in effect, groundwork and construction have begun at the first site.

Since autumn 2023, the number of people working on projects related to the construction of the new steel plant has steadily increased, reaching its peak in 2025. At most, up to 5,000 workers are expected to be on site, of which Boden Municipality aims to provide land and temporary permits for around 3,000. H2 Green Steel is responsible for the planned construction and management of the areas.

“It will be clear that we are now accelerating construction of the steel plant. The pace is increasing, and more of us are on site in Boden. To ensure good and flexible housing solutions for many, we are working with modular housing at several locations. Groundwork has now started, and we expect the modules to be in place with move-ins starting around April–May. Until then, we have built-in flexibility through what we call ‘bridge solutions’ using conference facilities in the region,” explains Anne Graf, Head of Regional Affairs at H2 Green Steel.

Multiple areas under development

In June 2021, Boden Municipality decided politically to plan and designate areas for temporary housing. Five geographical areas have been selected, where operations and maintenance must follow the municipality’s requirements.

With common standards for contractor housing—in terms of location, quality, and upkeep—Boden aims to ensure safety and comfort for residents, companies leasing the housing, and neighbouring residents alike. This also relieves pressure on Boden’s existing housing market.

The temporary contractor housing is intended for personnel working in Boden for shorter periods during the construction phase. The permits are time-limited. The housing will include reception services at the main facilities, check-in/check-out, cleaning services, and more. Shuttle buses will also be provided to transport residents to the site, reducing both traffic and the need for parking spaces.
