They will build the largest battery park in the Nordic region in Boden
The battery park will be located next to Stegra (Former H2 Green Steel) and is expected to be completed in 2024. It is considered a crucial piece of the puzzle in Sweden’s national energy transition.
Boden Industrial Park has become synonymous with Stegra’s pioneering establishment. However, more than half of Sweden’s largest detailed-planned industrial area—550 hectares—remains undeveloped.
Now, another major project is underway to accelerate the green transition. This time, it involves strengthening the local power grid by building the largest battery park in the Nordic region on one hectare of land, with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) and 100 megawatt hours (MWh).
The 50 MW capacity refers to the maximum power output at any given time—enough to theoretically supply a small city. The total energy stored, 100 MWh, corresponds to the daily energy consumption of roughly 1,800 Swedish households.
Enabling More Renewable Energy
This initiative directly addresses the need for greater flexibility and reliability in the energy system as renewable production expands. It will make Boden’s local grid more resilient and better equipped to handle industrial peak loads.
The battery park stores energy when supply exceeds demand and quickly releases it when demand rises—particularly when solar or wind power is unavailable. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and imported electricity, a vital step in the global fight against climate change. It can also improve voltage quality in the grid by providing reactive power, helping keep voltage within desired limits across the network.
Energy Sustainability
Bodens Energi plays a key role in making this project possible. The initiative is a collaboration between Vattenfall (regional grid owner), Bodens Energi (local grid owner), and Polar Structure (equipment owner).
“The region we operate in is the hub of Sweden’s green industrial transition and electrification. This requires innovative thinking and courage to create an energy system that supports the planned investments. We must accelerate grid expansion while building more renewable generation and energy storage. This investment with Polar Structure is an excellent example of the latter,” says Hans Stålnacke, CEO of Bodens Energi.

The initiative aligns with Bodens Energi’s sustainability work, which focuses on long-term solutions that respect ecological, social, and economic perspectives. Promoting energy recovery is one way the company contributes to a more sustainable future.
“As an energy company, we must be a driving force in this remarkable transition, and we are incredibly proud to contribute to one of the Nordic region’s largest battery storage facilities here in Boden,” says Hans Stålnacke.
A Step in a Larger Project
Polar Structure is a Swedish pioneer in infrastructure solutions and already operates one of the country’s largest battery parks in Haninge, south of Stockholm. While this new investment will temporarily make Boden home to the Nordic region’s largest battery park, the company sees it as part of a broader initiative.
“Battery storage is a vital piece of the green transition puzzle, and we are delighted to enable this groundbreaking project together with Bodens Energi,” says Tobias Emanuelsson.
“The municipality of Boden takes a holistic approach to community development and infrastructure, and we are proud to contribute not only with railway projects but also with energy solutions. Strengthening the local energy system is key—both for the green transition and for building a more resilient and sustainable society,” says Tobias Emanuelsson, CEO of Polar Structure.
