This is how many H2 Green Steel will hire

H2 Green Steel is revolutionising the steel industry with the world’s first green steel plant—and is now looking to recruit hundreds of new employees. HR Director Anette Sundström shared more about the company’s recruitment plans during Friday’s business breakfast in Sävast.

H2 Green Steel (H2GS) is a central player in the green societal transformation and is currently building the world’s first large-scale green steel plant. The plant is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95 percent compared to traditional blast furnace steelmaking. Now, the company is entering an intensive phase of recruitment for its new facility at Boden Industrial Park (BIP).

During the event at Boden Business Park, Sundström presented the company’s future plans and staffing needs.

“We are now entering a phase where, alongside the construction of our green steel plant in Boden, we are accelerating the work of building the organisation that will operate the facility,” she said.

H2GS plans to recruit around 600 people over the next year to staff different parts of the operation. The aim is to have approximately 1,500 employees in place by early 2026. To achieve this, the company has set an ambitious recruitment timeline, with a strong emphasis on creating a diverse and gender-balanced workplace, aiming for a 50/50 ratio between women and men across age groups.

The company is looking for a wide range of skills and roles to operate the green steel plant’s platforms. Key categories include:

  • Technicians
  • Assemblers
  • Mechanics
  • Electricians
  • Process operators
  • Maintenance staff

In addition, specific expertise is needed in electrolysis, DRI production, casting and hot rolling, as well as in digitalisation and machine learning. General professional skills are also sought in areas such as finance, procurement, and HR recruitment.

“We will now be more actively looking for process operators, technicians, electricians, and mechanics to operate different parts of the steel plant,” says Sundström, encouraging those interested to watch out for upcoming recruitment campaigns.

“We will be posting more job openings and carrying out targeted initiatives linked to our recruitment drive.”

H2 Green Steel plays a key role in the green transition in northern Sweden. Its extensive recruitment efforts will not only support operational needs but also contribute to the broader industrial and economic development of the region and the country.

For Boden Municipality, this transformation represents a leap in development equivalent to 20 years of growth under normal circumstances—but it is happening within just three years. This rapid shift brings both challenges and opportunities.
