Key recruitment for Boden’s green transition

Boden Municipality has appointed Thomas Sundqvist as the new Director of Development and Deputy Chief Executive Officer. With extensive experience from both the public and private sectors, he will take on a pivotal role at a time when the community transition is entering its next phase.

Thomas Sundqvist will assume his new position on 18 August. His role will include coordinating Boden’s strategic development work with a focus on long-term planning, collaboration, and progress – particularly in matters related to industrial establishment, infrastructure, and housing supply.

Sundqvist has previously worked closely with the municipality during the establishment of Stegra and brings many years of experience from both public service and private enterprise, most recently as a senior consultant at Gullers Grupp.

“It is both an honour and an exciting challenge to continue working with a transition that is not only of local importance, but also of national significance. I look forward to contributing to Boden’s development together with colleagues, businesses, and partners,” says Thomas Sundqvist.

New structure for enhanced coordination

As part of strengthening continuity and clarity in the transition process, the municipality is also developing its organisational structure. The former role of Business Relations Manager has been reshaped into a strategic collaboration model where three key figures – Municipal Chief Executive Magnus Åkerlund, CEO of Boden Business Park AB Thomas Fägerman, and Director of Development Thomas Sundqvist – will jointly oversee the municipality’s overall efforts in business development and strategic cooperation.

“Thomas has already been an important part of our transition, and in this new role he will be able to take an even broader perspective. This provides us with strong continuity at a stage where the pace continues to increase,” says Magnus Åkerlund, Municipal Chief Executive of Boden Municipality.

Next step in the transition

In recent years, Boden has become a focal point for future industrial development. Investments in green steel production, new infrastructure, and future skills supply have placed the municipality on the map – both nationally and internationally. Few places in the world have advanced as rapidly in the new industrialisation as Boden.

Here, the world’s first large-scale green steel plant and Europe’s largest hydrogen facility are currently under construction, alongside record-paced infrastructure development. Once Stegra begins operations, not only will emissions be significantly reduced – the local and regional economy will also be boosted through new jobs, new businesses, and increased migration to the area.

With the new organisational model in place, and an experienced development director onboard, Boden is well-positioned to take the next step in its transformation.

“We already have a strong foundation to build on, and I am confident about the future. With Thomas joining the team, we gain a powerful driving force for the continued transition,” says Magnus Åkerlund.
