Arctic Botanic Garden purchases land in Storklinten

Arctic Botanic Garden has completed its preliminary feasibility study and is now continuing the development work within the framework of a bridge project run by the association Arctic Garden in collaboration with Bodens Utveckling AB and Boden Business Park. This marks another step toward the goal of establishing Sweden’s northernmost accredited botanical garden in Storklinten.

The Arctic Botanic Garden initiative has both national and international ambitions, with a clear focus on Arctic flora, research, and public engagement.

During 2025, an initial feasibility study was conducted with the Municipality of Boden as the project owner and project management carried out by the non-profit association The Arctic Garden.

We have worked intensively to adapt the plan to the site, prepare documentation for the detailed development plan, and anchor the process for financing and future collaborations,” says project manager Lena Vikström.

A decisive factor since the idea was first conceived has been resolving the land issue. The selected site in the Municipality of Boden—chosen in consultation with experts including representatives from the Gothenburg Botanical Garden—is located on land owned by Storklinten Rekreation.

They welcome the initiative, are involved in the planning, and have enabled the sale of the five hectares of land on which the facility itself is planned to be built. The land purchase has now been formally completed. Opportunities for lease agreements have also been developed for parts of the surrounding land at Storklinten to ensure the preservation of species as well as continued opportunities for forest recreation in the nearby area.

Peter Engström, Storklinten Recreation, project manager Lena Vikström, and Mats Havström, Head of Collections and Research at the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, look ahead to the continued plans for the Arctic Botanic Garden after five hectares of land in Storklinten were acquired for the initiative.

The feasibility study and land acquisition have resulted, among other things, in the association moving the project forward together with Boden Business Park/Bodens Utveckling AB (BUAB), with support from the Municipality of Boden.

The aim is to create a world-unique concept with strong international appeal—a year-round attraction that complements the existing visitor economy in the Edefors area, Boden, and Swedish Lapland.
