Boden Sustainability Center moves from vision to reality

Over the past few years, Boden has become one of Sweden’s most closely watched municipalities when it comes to industrial development and the green transition. While the investments have created new opportunities, they have also highlighted the need to address the social challenges that accompany rapid growth and transformation.

This is the foundation of the Boden Sustainability Center, an initiative that is now moving from feasibility study to implementation.

“The green transition is not only about new investments and jobs. It is also about people – about creating opportunities for more individuals to take part in the development, find their place in the labour market and feel included in society,” says Magnus Åkerlund, Municipal Chief Executive of the Municipality of Boden.

Bringing stakeholders together around shared challenges

The Boden Sustainability Center has emerged through extensive collaboration between the municipality, businesses, civil society organisations and other stakeholders. During the feasibility study, participants identified several areas where new approaches are needed to address the opportunities and challenges arising from rapid societal development.

The project will now focus on issues such as skills provision, education, inclusion, innovation and cross-sector collaboration.

“We know that no single organisation can solve these challenges on its own. To succeed, we need to bring together expertise, experience and resources from many different sectors. Creating the conditions for exactly that kind of collaboration is what the Boden Sustainability Center is all about,” says Magnus Åkerlund.

Building structures for the workforce needs of the future

The project builds on lessons learned from both the VÄRDEN feasibility study and the previous Vinnova-funded work on the Boden Sustainability Center. These experiences have shown that while the willingness to collaborate is strong, long-term structures that enable organisations to work together across boundaries are still needed.

The objective is therefore to establish a new cross-sector collaboration framework where municipalities, businesses, academia and civil society can work together on issues related to workforce development and social sustainability. The project will also develop a municipality-wide project hub designed to strengthen the capacity to initiate, coordinate and leverage development projects.

“We have learned that we need more than just a place for collaboration. We also need structures, working methods and organisations that ensure collaboration leads to tangible results. That is exactly what this project aims to create,” says Magnus Åkerlund.

Part of the work will also focus on defining the form, function and location of the future Boden Sustainability Center. The ambition is to create a meeting place where people, organisations and initiatives can come together to contribute to sustainable societal development.

An investment in Boden’s future

The project is being carried out in collaboration with several partners that have been involved since the feasibility study, including Stegra, Polar Structure, Boden Tillsammans, Boden Business Park and the Municipality of Boden.

The total project budget exceeds SEK 16 million, and the project will run from autumn 2026 until summer 2029.

“Boden has received considerable attention for its industrial transformation. Through this initiative, we are now strengthening the human dimension of that development. It is an investment in a society where people want to live, work and build their future – long after the first industrial investments have been completed,” says Magnus Åkerlund.
