EU adviser visits Boden to learn from the green transition

The study visit focused on increasing understanding of the developments taking place in Boden and the needs that arise when major industrial investments are implemented at a rapid pace.

Maya Jollés, Economic Adviser at the European Commission Representation in Sweden, described the visit as an opportunity to listen and learn.

“We are here to better understand what you need from the EU and which areas are important to Boden and the region. I was already aware that Boden is at the forefront of the green transition. For us, it is about understanding how we can help ensure that the transition benefits everyone who lives here,” says Maya Jollès.

From industrial investment to community transformation

In Boden, the transition encompasses far more than new industrial investments. As new jobs are created and more people need to be able to live and work in the municipality, the demand for housing, skills and infrastructure is also increasing.

These are also areas where EU policy and funding can play an important role.

“At EU level, we are driving the green transition forward and working to direct EU funding towards areas that are important to its success, such as housing. The hope is that EU funding can continue to be channelled in ways that ensure that people living here share in the benefits,” says Maya Jollès.

For the Municipality of Boden, international visits also provide an opportunity to give a concrete picture of what Europe’s green transition means at local level.

“Of course, we want to be open about the challenges that come with a community developing as rapidly as Boden is. But it is equally important to highlight the significant opportunities – new jobs, investment and a growing municipality. When representatives of the European Commission visit us, we have the opportunity to share experiences from a place where the transition is actually happening here and now,” says Béatrice Öman, Municipal Commissioner of Boden.
