First section of new road to Boden Industrial Park completed
Road and railway side by side. The first section of the new road to Boden Industrial Park is now opening to traffic.
When construction began in spring 2024, one of Boden’s largest infrastructure projects in many years was already under way. A new railway and a new road were to be built side by side, connecting Boden Industrial Park more closely to the existing transport network.
Two and a half years later, two major milestones have been reached. The railway was inaugurated in June, and now the first section of the road has been completed.
The new stretch runs from the Svartbyn interchange on Road 97 to the boundary of Stegra’s site and opens to traffic on 1 October. The first section has been completed on schedule and within the project budget.
“Boden Industrial Park is developing into one of the municipality’s largest employment areas. Many people will work here, while large volumes of materials and goods will need to be transported to and from the site. The infrastructure therefore needs to develop in step with the area,” says Ellinor Isaksson Larsson, Head of Planning and Land Development at Boden Municipality.
Construction of the road and railway in parallel began in 2024.
New road designed for major transport flows
The new road has been designed to handle the significant traffic flows expected as Boden Industrial Park continues to develop. This includes both people travelling to and from the area and the transport of materials and goods.
When the first section opens on 1 October, it will be available for traffic to and from Stegra’s site. Stegra’s heavy material transports will, however, continue for the time being to primarily use the northern entrance and the temporary construction road from Road 383.
“We know that many people in Boden have been looking forward to this and have shown great patience throughout the construction period. We hope it will make a difference for them – not only in the short term, but in the longer term as well.”
Building for the next stage
But the municipality’s investment does not end at the boundary of Stegra’s site.
The completed section is part of a larger road project that will create a continuous connection through Boden Industrial Park and onwards towards Flarken and Smedsbyvägen. This will also restore a connection that was lost when the area was redeveloped as part of Stegra’s establishment.
The project also includes a pedestrian and cycle path.
The entire road project represents an investment of close to SEK 500 million. The section now being opened accounts for just over SEK 200 million. Construction of the remaining sections is continuing, with the full route expected to open to traffic by the end of 2027.
For Boden Municipality, the investment is about both meeting today’s transport needs and creating the conditions for future development.
“Stegra is the first and largest establishment at Boden Industrial Park, but the area is planned to accommodate more businesses. If we are to continue developing the area and welcome new establishments, the infrastructure needs to be in place. This is therefore an investment that will benefit us for many years to come,” says Ellinor Isaksson Larsson.

Road and railway built side by side
The road has been built in parallel with the six-kilometre railway to Boden Industrial Park.
The road project has been carried out in collaboration between Boden Municipality and Boden Järnväg AB, with Polar Structure as the contractor and Peab Anläggning responsible for construction. Sweco has been responsible for the engineering design.
“Being able to develop the road and railway in parallel has been an important part of the project. When new industry is established on this scale, the fundamental infrastructure needs to keep pace with the development. This also demonstrates what can be achieved when municipalities, industry and private-sector partners work closely together,” says Daniel Kronheffer, Project Director at Polar Structure.
When the railway was inaugurated in June, Boden Industrial Park gained a direct connection to the Swedish rail network. With the first section of the road now opening, another important step has been taken in the development of the area.
