About the project
A feasibility study will explore the possibilities of establishing Sweden’s northernmost accredited botanical garden in Storklinten. The area has high biodiversity and is located close to both Ekopark Storklinten and the Storklinten ski and recreational facility.
Currently, there are only five accredited botanical gardens in Sweden that focus on conserving and researching wild plants, with the northernmost located in Uppsala. The Arctic Botanic Garden is therefore planned to cover all of northern Sweden and focus on alpine and arctic plants.
What we are doing
The sketches adapted for Storklinten include:
- Idea and demonstration gardens.
- Arctic and Norrbotten nature and culture.
- Visitor center with a restaurant.
- Carl von Linné’s work and early research in Norrbotten.
- Boardwalks by small ponds for close nature experiences.
- Development of a platform for research, plant conservation, and public education.
- Preparation for a destination for research, tourism, and culture.
Timeline and current status
The feasibility study will take place during 2025. Design, groundwork, and phased implementation will be developed in line with permits and funding. During the study, local meetings are planned for information and dialogue, adapting the plan to the site, and preparing documentation for the detailed plan and financing.
Funding, collaboration and responsibilities
Boden Municipality is the principal authority. Project management is handled by The Arctic Garden non-profit association. The feasibility study is carried out in close collaboration with the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.
Region Norrbotten is contributing SEK 790,000 to the feasibility study, which is also receiving SEK 300,000 from the Längmanska Business Fund and support from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.
