About the project

Boden Municipality is expanding the water and wastewater system around Västra Vittjärvsträsket. The aim is to protect people’s health and nature. Municipal water and wastewater is often the most sustainable solution where many properties are located close to lakes and waterways.

Background and decisions

In autumn 2016, the Land and Environment Court confirmed the County Administrative Board’s order that Boden Municipality must provide a public wastewater system in Kusån and Kusön. In autumn 2016, the Municipal Council adopted a water and wastewater plan that identifies the Norra Älvstråket upstream of Vittjärv as a priority area. In May 2018, service areas for water and wastewater were established for Kusån, Kusön, Rasmyran and Södra Degerbäcken. The municipality’s responsibility to establish service areas is set out in the Act on Public Water Services.

What we are doing

We are installing pipe networks and pump stations to carry wastewater from each property to a new municipal treatment plant next to the existing plant in Degerbäcken. The municipality is responsible for pipes up to the connection point at your property boundary.

How to connect your property

  • Connection point: You will receive a proposed location along the property boundary closest to the main line. Some adjustments are possible.
  • Drinking water: Properties without municipal drinking water will receive a connection point at the boundary.
  • Excavation on your property: Excavation from the boundary to the house is carried out and paid for by the property owner.

Household pump station for low-pressure sewer

Most properties will connect via a household pump station for low-pressure sewer installed on the property. The municipality provides the pump station. The property owner arranges and pays for professional installation.

  • Place the pump station where maintenance staff can access it easily.
  • Do not place it on a drivable surface.
  • Keep a level, obstacle-free area within about 1.5 metres. Surface water must not run towards the lid.
  • Do not build over the pump station.
  • Place the junction box outdoors, clearly visible and at least one metre above ground.
  • Place the alarm unit indoors where any alarm is easy to notice.

  • Protect the pump station and service lines from freezing. The property owner is responsible on their own property.
  • Never switch off power to the pump station. Flooding can occur.
  • During a power cut, avoid flushing, washing up, laundry or showering until power returns.
  • If away for a longer period, run clean water indoors for five minutes to reduce the risk of sludge hardening in the line.

  • The property owner has supervisory responsibility. Contact Boden Municipality on +46 70 600 19 18. You can silence the signal with “Reset” on the alarm unit, but you must still report the fault.

Do I have to connect?

Yes. Properties within the service area must connect to municipal wastewater and pay the connection fee when the system is built.

Two adjacent plots, one house?

The connection fee is charged for each developed property. The usage fee is charged where the connection is in use.

Holiday home without water and wastewater today?

The connection fee applies if the property is developed. The annual usage fee applies only when you connect.

Can I choose the connection point location?

The basic rule is along the boundary closest to the main line. Some adjustment is possible.

New private wastewater system?

Compensation can be paid for systems less than ten years old at the time the municipal connection point is provided. Systems built after the service area decision are not compensated.

Who digs on my property?

The property owner.

After commissioning?

Keep the power on and flush only urine, faeces and toilet paper. Other items can block the pump and costs fall to the owner.

Timeline and current status

Work is currently underway on the final stages.
