What is civil defense?
Civil defense includes all efforts that strengthen society’s resilience in times of war or the threat of war. It involves authorities, municipalities, regions, companies, organizations, and private individuals.
The purpose is to protect the civilian population and ensure that essential societal functions continue to operate. This includes, for example, healthcare, food transport, water supply, preschools, and schools.
By maintaining everyday life as much as possible, security and stability are created even under difficult conditions.
Increased preparedness
The government can decide on increased preparedness to strengthen Sweden’s ability to meet an aggressor and to protect the population.
When this happens, authorities and municipalities are tasked with prioritizing and adapting their operations. Information about increased preparedness is broadcast on radio and TV. Swedish Radio P4 is the designated emergency channel.
The municipality’s responsibility in times of war or threat of war
The municipality is responsible for ensuring that essential services can continue even during increased preparedness. This means that:
a wartime organization is established
planning is done for staffing
services are adapted for total defense
Boden Municipality works actively with its wartime organization to meet the demands that may arise.
Total defense
Total defense consists of both civil defense and military defense.
Civil defense ensures that society functions and that people have what they need most. Military defense protects the country’s borders and territory.
Together they form the total defense, which is the responsibility of the whole society. Sweden’s strength is built on our shared resilience and on everyone helping each other.
