Public Warning Message

The Public Warning Message is a system used in accidents and serious incidents. Messages are broadcast on radio and TV, and can also be sent by SMS or outdoor warning sirens (known in Sweden as “Hesa Fredrik”).

What to do when you hear the siren:

  • Go indoors immediately
  • Close doors, windows, and ventilation
  • Listen to Swedish Radio P4 102,9 MHz

The siren system is tested at 15:00 on the first non-holiday Monday in March, June, September, and December.

Tips and Advice

Children are also affected when society is in crisis. On the website Lilla Krisinfo, run by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, there is information for children and young people.

On Lilla Krisinfo, children and young people can:

  • Get advice on power outages, floods, thin ice, and storms.
  • Learn how to help someone who is injured.
  • Read about NATO, the war in Ukraine, and other important issues.

The information on Lilla Krisinfo always comes from Swedish authorities. This makes it a safe and reliable source, even if it is not always the first with news.

We receive information from many different sources every day. Source criticism helps us evaluate what is trustworthy and who is behind the information.

Checklist for source criticism

  • Who is behind the information, and can you find the original source?
  • Who benefits if you spread it?
  • Why does the information exist? Does it try to influence your thoughts and actions?
  • How old is the information? Is it still relevant?
  • Where did you find it? Is the source reliable and previously confirmed?
  • Can you find the same information in other sources?
  • Also look for information that goes against your own opinion.

Counter misinformation
Be alert to false information and do not spread it further. By being critical, you can help prevent rumors and propaganda.

Don’t be fooled
On the website Bli inte lurad (“Don’t be fooled”), you can learn to recognize disinformation, deception, and propaganda.

We use digital solutions every day. By protecting your data and acting safely online, you reduce the risk of fraud and information loss.

Beware of fraud attempts
Fraud often means that someone pretends to be another person in order to trick you. Be cautious if someone asks for your bank details or electronic identification.

Remember the three L’s (in Swedish):

  • Lämna aldrig ut – Never share passwords or codes.
  • Lägg på luren – Hang up if the call seems suspicious.
  • Logga aldrig in – Never log in with your BankID at the request of someone who calls you.

Säkerhetskollen (“The Security Check”)
On the website Säkerhetskollen, you will find knowledge about online safety, advice, guides, and articles about the most common risks and crimes right now.

If Phones and Electricity Do Not Work

If telephones and electricity are cut off, we will spread information in other ways. This can be done through notice boards, leaflets, or at public information points such as emergency meeting points, schools, and sports halls.
