Voluntary defense organizations

When society faces crises and major challenges, extra resources are needed. Voluntary defense organizations are non-profit, member-based organizations that train and recruit people to support authorities, municipalities, and regions.

There are 18 voluntary defense organizations with specific roles in preparedness. They contribute with training, knowledge, and practical support.

Why get involved?

As a member of a voluntary defense organization, you gain:

  • knowledge, skills, and personal development.
  • increased ability to act during crises and serious incidents.
  • opportunities to lead and organize others.
  • community and cooperation within an important mission.

By helping others, you also strengthen society.

Different areas of involvement

  • Military – the military defense, such as the Home Guard, has a great need for volunteers.
  • Civil – volunteers are needed in civil defense during crises.
  • Youth – for those aged 15 to 20 who want meaningful and developing activities in their free time.

The voluntary resource group (FRG)

At the local level, the municipality cooperates with Boden’s Civil Defense Association and the Voluntary Resource Group (FRG).

The FRG consists of volunteers with different skills and is called in when the municipality needs to strengthen its resources. The group can assist with, for example:

  • evacuations,
  • information and administration,
  • practical tasks,
  • human support for those affected.

Training for FRG

To become a member of the FRG, you complete a 36-hour basic training. It includes:

  • how the municipality’s preparedness organization works,
  • first aid and CPR,
  • meeting people in crisis,
  • organizing spontaneous volunteers,
  • preventive fire safety.

After the training, you sign an agreement with the municipality. The training is funded by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).
