About the group

POSOM means Psychological and Social Care at serious incidents and accidents. It is a cooperation between several public services. The group arrives at a major incident to give support until regular services can work as normal.

When is the group activated?

The group is called in at major incidents and disasters when ordinary resources are not enough.

Cooperation and network

The group works with health care, schools, social services, the rescue service and other actors. The municipality also cooperates with support groups within the municipality and between municipalities as a shared network during incidents.

Support and actions

Tasks of the group

  • Set up and coordinate information and support centres.
  • Provide emotional support and practical help to affected people.
  • Cooperate with other public actors.

Common psychological reactions

It is common to feel worry, restlessness, trembling, sweating, pounding heart, repeated thoughts about the event day and night, emptiness, unreality, nightmares, loss of initiative, self-blame, guilt, crying, anger and irritation.

Common physical reactions

Tiredness, headache, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping are common.

Processing a difficult event

Many people need to tell the story several times. Ask family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to listen. With their support you can often process the experience in everyday life.

When and how to seek help

Seek professional help if reactions are too strong or last a long time.

  • Adults: During daytime, contact your doctor for referral to a psychologist, a psychiatrist or the hospital emergency service for mental health. In the evening, contact the hospital urgent care centre.
  • Children and young people: Contact the school student health service.
  • Church support: Daytime support is available from your church. In the evening and at night, the on-call priest can help. Call 112 to be connected.
