WHAT IS THE SEVESO LEGISLATION?

The Seveso legislation applies to operations that handle large quantities of hazardous chemicals. Its purpose is to prevent major accidents and to limit the consequences for people and the environment.

All operations covered by the legislation must maintain a high level of safety and inform the public about the risks that exist and how to act if an accident occurs.

IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS

If an accident is assessed as serious enough to affect residents, the rescue services will issue an Important Public Announcement (VMA).

What to do when a VMA is issued:

  • Go indoors.
  • Close windows, doors, and ventilation.
  • Listen to Swedish Radio P4.
  • Follow information on radio, TV, and on SVT Teletext, page 599.
