What we do

We create safety for everyone who lives, works or visits Boden. We reduce risks, prepare for incidents and act fast when something happens.

Our tasks

  • Prevent accidents, crises and threats.
  • Protect and save life, property and the environment.
  • Limit the consequences when an accident occurs.
  • Work together with other municipalities in the county.

Laws we follow

  • The Act on Protection Against Accidents.
  • The Act on Municipal and Regional Measures for Extraordinary Events and Increased Readiness.
  • The Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods.

Action programme

Every municipality must have an action programme for protection against accidents. It sets our goals, known risks, our ability to carry out operations and how we work preventively.

Where we are

We place resources where they make the most difference to ensure fast response.

Boden – main station

The station is at Slipvägen 10. Fire and rescue and the region’s ambulance service share the site.

  • On-call crew: one officer and four firefighters. Response within ninety seconds.
  • Retained crew: one officer and four retained firefighters. Response within eight minutes, around the clock.

Harads – retained station

One officer and four firefighters on call. Response within six minutes.

Gunnarsbyn – volunteer unit

Volunteer staff without formal on-call duty. When alerted, a nearby station with on-call or retained staff is also dispatched.

Work and train with us

Our goal is a society without accidents. The work includes fires, road traffic collisions, medical response, chemical incidents, dangerous goods, animal rescue and oil spills. Call-outs are one part of the job; the rest is training, equipment care and prevention.

Roles with us

  • Firefighter: works both preventively and operationally, provides information in schools and workplaces.
  • Fire protection engineer: works systematically with risk management and prevention.
  • Retained firefighter, rescue service staff on call: responds in the local area and has another primary job.

Qualities we look for

Good physical fitness, strong mental resilience, ability to handle stress, desire to help people and strong teamwork skills. The work can be at height and in confined spaces.

Education and training

  • Protection Against Accidents: a two-year post-secondary programme with theory and practice that leads to a qualification in rescue and safety work.
  • Fire protection engineer: three and a half years of university studies in Luleå or Lund. To lead rescue operations within municipal fire and rescue services, an additional year at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency’s school in Revinge is required.
  • Training for retained firefighters: provided locally and complements your main job. Many employers value this competence.

For children and young people

We teach pupils in school years two, six and nine. Year two receives visits in school. Year six visits the fire station and trains practically, for example using a portable fire extinguisher. Year nine attends the course “Up in Smoke”, which prevents arson. Our mascot Flammy teaches fire safety and supports children after difficult events.
