Rules and responsibility

Where you may burn

As a rule, burning is not permitted in built-up areas. If you burn outside these areas, be very careful and do not do it alone.

Notify your burn

Report your planned burning as soon as possible and at least twenty-four hours in advance by calling +46 921 62 300. You are always responsible for the burn, even after notifying the municipality.

Assess weather and risk

Do not burn in dry weather or strong wind. Refrain entirely if the risk of spread is high.

Safe burning

Equipment you must have

Hose with running water, shovels, beaters, rakes and similar extinguishing equipment. Keep a mobile phone at hand so you can alert the rescue service if needed.

Distance and protective zone

Burn at least ten metres from buildings and anything that could be damaged. Water a two-metre protective zone around the area you will burn.

What you may burn

Burn only branches, twigs and brushwood. Leaves should be composted. Other waste must be taken to municipal facilities. Burning waste is prohibited.

How to proceed

Burn a little at a time. This lowers radiant heat and reduces the risk of spread. It also creates less smoke and makes the fire easier to extinguish.

Monitoring and extinguishing

Never leave the fire unattended. Watch it as long as there is a risk of spread. Extinguish thoroughly, soak the ash pile and check the site again after a few hours.

Fire ban

In dry weather or strong wind there is a high risk of fire spread. The rescue service may introduce a fire ban, which means all open fires are prohibited. This also applies to designated fire pits when using wood, twigs and similar fuel. You may use small portable stoves with an open flame during a fire ban, and you may grill at designated barbecue sites if you use charcoal or briquettes and act with great care.

Walpurgis bonfires and wildlife

Walpurgis Night, 30 April

You may arrange a private Walpurgis bonfire. You burn at your own risk. Be especially careful in dry and windy conditions, or do not burn at all.

What may go on the bonfire

Only dry brushwood, twigs and clean wood. Burning waste or rubbish is prohibited under environmental rules.

Why waste must not be burned

Impregnated and painted wood, hardboard, waste oil, rubber, plastic and other waste release toxic and harmful smoke that damages health and the environment. Take such waste to municipal facilities.

Remember the hedgehogs

Piles of brush and twigs are perfect shelters. Hedgehogs may be resting inside. Check or move the pile before lighting it.
