Garden lupine

Garden lupine is common along roadsides and ditches. Despite its colourful flowers, it is an invasive species that threatens many important meadow plants. It is not listed by the EU, but it is a major problem in Norrbotten.

Why is it a problem?

  • It pushes out native meadow flowers that are important for pollinators.
  • It changes the nutrient balance in the soil, causing native species to disappear.
  • It spreads quickly, and its seeds can survive in the soil for many years.

How to recognise garden lupine

Height: 50–150 cm

Flowers: Long clusters in blue, pink, purple, or white

Leaves: Palm-shaped with 7–9 narrow leaflets

Stem: Sturdy and upright

Habitat: Common along roadsides, ditches, and open areas

What can you do?

  1. Control it on your land – Dig up the roots or cut the plant before it sets seed.
  2. Report sightings – Report findings at invasivaarter.nu.

By stopping the spread of lupine, we protect biodiversity in Norrbotten. Garden lupine flowers from June to August.
