Canadian goldenrod

Canadian goldenrod is an invasive species often found along roadsides, in gardens and on abandoned land. It spreads quickly, can take over large areas and threatens biodiversity. The species is included on Sweden’s national list of invasive species.

Why is it a problem?

  • Forms dense stands that outcompete native plants and reduce biodiversity.
  • Changes habitats for insects and other animals that depend on native species.
  • Spreads rapidly through both seeds and underground runners.

How to identify Canadian goldenrod

Height: 50–150 cm.

Flowers: Small yellow flowers growing in large, plume-like clusters.

Leaves: Narrow, elongated leaves with serrated edges.

Stem: Upright and usually unbranched near the base.

Habitat: Common along roads, railways, in gardens and on abandoned land.
