Climate action in Boden
Boden is in an important period of transition. Climate action is a key driving force in the municipality’s development. Here, we have strong conditions for leading the transition through investments in renewable energy, circular solutions and green industry. Collaboration between the municipality, businesses, associations and residents allows us to move forward faster and more sustainably.
Everyone is needed in the transition. Small everyday choices make a difference and help build a sustainable Boden.
Viable Cities and Climate-Neutral Cities 2030
Boden is part of the national initiative Climate-Neutral Cities 2030, coordinated by Viable Cities. It is a collaboration between municipalities, government agencies, researchers and civil society with the goal of reducing climate impact.
What does this network give Boden?
- Strong collaboration: Part of a national network that drives climate action forward.
- Knowledge and support: Access to research, expert guidance and new tools.
- Opportunity to scale up: Easier to test and spread new working methods and technologies.
- Funding: Better opportunities to apply for project grants and investments.
- Faster transition: Shared goals and experience exchange help us reach a climate-smart Boden more quickly.
Renewable energy and energy efficiency
Boden is actively working to reduce energy use and increase the share of renewable energy.
We improve energy efficiency in municipal buildings through smart controls, better insulation and modern lighting.
We also invest in local solutions such as solar power and biogas.
Biogas – local energy that reduces emissions
Food waste and sewage sludge are turned into biogas at our own facility.
The biogas powers local public transport and contributes to a climate-smart transport system.
Almost all energy in municipal buildings is renewable
In 2024, 99 percent of all energy used in municipal buildings came from renewable or recovered sources.
This means that electricity and heating in schools, care homes and other municipal facilities are almost entirely fossil-free.
Where does Boden’s energy come from?
District heating
District heating is produced at Boden’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant by burning:
- combustible waste
- reclaimed wood
- wood chips
- peat
- bio-oil (in small amounts)
This ensures that materials that would otherwise be discarded are put to use.
Electricity production
Electricity comes from two sources:
- The CHP plant, where energy is recovered from the same fuels used for district heating
- Six small hydropower plants located in the municipality
