What we want to achieve
Boden aims for a safe, accessible and sustainable transport system. We prioritise solutions that cut emissions, improve road safety and make it easy to choose walking, cycling and public transport. The Traffic and Parking Strategy guides decisions and planning.
Four priority action areas
- Walking and cycling as the natural choices
- Better conditions for public transport
- The car as part of a lively and sustainable community
- Parking as a shared concern
Why we work on sustainable travel
- Cleaner air and less noise in urban areas
- Safer streets for children, young people and older adults
- More space for people, green areas and city life
- A transport system that is efficient, fair and sustainable over time
Cycling in Boden 2025–2029
In February 2025, the Municipal Council adopted a Bicycle Plan for Boden for the years 2025–2029. It sets out how we expand, upgrade and maintain the cycle network so more people choose the bicycle for daily trips. The plan complements the Traffic and Parking Strategy.
What does the Bicycle Plan say?
- Better cycle routes: existing corridors upgraded and connected.
- Safer crossings: unsafe junctions are improved.
- Priority winter maintenance on walking and cycling paths.
- More cycle parking at stops and key destinations.
- Clearer wayfinding and a digital cycle map.
Why cycling is a smart choice
- Better health and less stress
- Lower travel costs
- Less congestion
- Cleaner air and lower climate impact
Cycle maps are available from Citizen Service at City Hall.
Public transport
Boden’s local buses run on biogas produced here in the municipality.
The biogas is made from food waste and sewage sludge and is a climate-smart fuel. This means it reduces emissions and makes the air cleaner in Boden.
Already in 2012, our buses started running on biogas – making Boden a pioneer in sustainable transport.
Electric vehicle charging
Driving an electric car reduces emissions by 70–80 percent compared to a petrol or diesel car.
To make it easier for more people to choose an electric car, we need many public charging points – places where you can charge while out and about, such as along major roads, near shops, and in the town centre.
When charging points are easily available, it becomes easier to travel sustainably, and we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
