Local Heritage Areas and Community Centers
In Boden, there are heritage areas that serve as important meeting places for residents and visitors. Local heritage associations preserve stories and traditions of the region. They arrange activities such as midsummer celebrations, autumn and Christmas markets, as well as other community events.
Historic Buildings and Cultural Sites
Boden has many valuable historic buildings and cultural environments. These include: Boden Salute Station, the Bakery Cottage at Kläppgården in Harads, the Double Cottage in Forsnäs, Edefors Church, Sandträsk Sanatorium, the railway station, Boden Fortress, Gunnarsbyn Church, Havremagasinet, the Central School, church cottages, Överluleå Church, the Eyvind Johnson Cottage, Laxholmen, the former nursing home in Harads, the former Ordnance Depot in Boden, the former Artillery Regiment A 8, Boden Station House, and Vittjärv Summer Cottage (the Mayor’s Summer Cottage).
Boden Salute Station
Boden Fortress has served as one of Sweden’s official salute stations since June 2, 1931. The salute site is located at Kvarnängen by Lake Bodträsket. A salute is a ceremonial military greeting fired on special occasions. At least four cannons of the same caliber are required. In Boden, four cannons model m/02-33, caliber 7.5 cm, are used.
The Artillery Regiment A 9 fires the salute under the commandant’s responsibility. Salutes are fired on Sweden’s National Day, royal birthdays and name days, and other occasions as decided by the Supreme Commander. Standard schedule: 21 shots for a regular salute, 42 shots for a special ceremonial or mourning salute. Example dates:
- 28 January: the King’s name day
- 30 April: the King’s birthday
- 6 June: Sweden’s National Day
- 14 July: the Crown Princess’s birthday
- 8 August: the Queen’s name day
- 23 December: the Queen’s birthday
Salutes are fired at 12:00 on weekdays, and at 13:00 on Sundays and public holidays.
Public Art
In central Boden there are several works of public art, such as murals, sculptures and wall reliefs. You can enjoy art simply by walking through town. For questions about the municipal art collection, contact Boden Defence Museum through the museum director.
