The School of Arts

The School of Arts strives to give every child and young person the chance to grow through artistic expression. The goal is to strengthen self-confidence and self-esteem through culture.

Tuition is offered in music, drama and dance. All tuition at the School of Arts is free of charge.

Most activities take place during school hours in primary schools across Boden Municipality. If you choose an instrument, dance or drama, the School of Arts will come to your school.

In the evenings, activities are held at Björknäs Upper Secondary School, where orchestras, dance and drama groups, and choirs meet.

Tuition in music, drama and dance

In singing tuition you develop your voice and learn different techniques. You practice breathing, pitch, articulation and expression. You also gain experience performing for an audience.

Tuition can be individual or in small groups. You may apply from grade 5, but lessons start in grade 6.

Singing provides a foundation for many other musical expressions. Students who take singing may also join concerts and collaborate with choirs or instrumental groups.

Choir is open to students in grades 4–6. You learn to sing together with others and discover the joy of creating music as a group.

You practice harmony, listening and cooperation. Singing in a choir builds community and makes it easier to perform in front of others.

Rehearsals take place in the evenings at Björknäs Upper Secondary School. The number of places is limited, and sometimes there is a waiting list.

Instrument tuition allows you to learn to play an instrument on your own and together with others. You practice technique, ear training and reading sheet music.

Tuition is mainly for students in grades 4–9, but in some cases you may start earlier, from grade 2, if there is space available.

Available instruments include viola, baritone horn, recorder, cello, bass guitar, violin, guitar, clarinet, double bass, oboe, piano, saxophone, drums, trombone, trumpet, tuba, flute, French horn and voice.

You start with simple melodies and gradually develop your playing. As you progress, you may join orchestras or ensembles and play together with others.

Instrument rental

A limited number of instruments are available for rental for one year. The rental period can be extended if instruments are available. Small violins are rented until the student is ready for a full-size instrument. The School of Arts does not rent out pianos or drum kits.

In consultation with your teacher, you will choose an instrument that suits you. A parent or guardian signs a rental agreement, and you as a student are responsible for the instrument.

A small fee is charged each term for instrument rental. Students must purchase their own sheet music and exercise books.

If you decide to stop, rented instruments must be returned immediately. A fee will be charged if the student has taken part in at least three lessons.

Dance is available for students in grades 4–9, with applications open from grade 3. Admission usually starts in grade 4, if space allows.

In dance tuition you practice rhythm, coordination, balance and expression. You work with both choreography and improvisation.

Tuition usually takes place during school hours and in groups. If your school has no dance classes, you may be offered a place in an evening group.

Dance strengthens both the body and self-confidence. Through performances, students gain stage experience and the joy of sharing with an audience.

Drama is open to students in grades 4–9. You may apply from grade 3, but admission starts from grade 4 if space allows.

In drama tuition you work with body language, movement, voice and expression. You train cooperation, concentration and the ability to express emotions and ideas.

Tuition takes place in groups during school hours. If your school has no facilities or too few applicants, you may be offered a place in an evening group.

Our orchestras

When you have played for a while, you may join one of the School of Arts’ orchestras. Your instrument teacher will help you find the right level based on your skills and experience.

There are orchestras at different levels, from beginner to advanced. This way, you can develop step by step and play with others at the same level.

Rehearsals take place in the evenings at Björknäs Upper Secondary School. Playing in an orchestra allows you to practice teamwork, listening and cooperation, while also performing at concerts.

El Sistema

El Sistema in Boden is based at Hedenskolan and is part of the national El Sistema movement.

El Sistema is a global music education model where orchestral playing supports children’s personal development. Students learn discipline, cooperation and patience while discovering the joy of music.

In Sweden, more than 100 schools and Schools of Arts take part in El Sistema in cooperation with professional orchestras and choirs. The programme includes about 10,000 children.

In Boden, El Sistema gives children at Hedenskolan the chance to play in orchestra during school hours and perform at concerts in the evenings.
