Dispose of your car correctly

An end-of-life car is considered hazardous waste. To protect the environment, the vehicle must be dismantled at an authorized scrapyard.

Why are scrap cars dangerous?

An old car contains substances that can harm nature:

  • Mercury: as little as 5–10 grams can poison an entire lake.
  • Oils, gasoline, and antifreeze: pollute water in lakes, streams, and wells.
  • Heavy metals: such as lead and mercury do not break down but remain in soil and plants.

Did you know that 85 percent of an old car can be recycled and turned into materials for new cars?

How to dispose of your car

f you have a scrap car, you must contact an authorized car dismantler.

  • The scrapping premium was removed in 2007, but many dismantlers accept cars free of charge if you deliver them yourself.
  • You will always receive a certificate of destruction when the car is handed in. This certificate is sent to the Swedish Transport Agency and means that ownership of the car is transferred to the dismantler.
  • The dismantler is then responsible for ensuring that the car is taken care of correctly.

Storage of vehicles

If you want to store or renovate a car long-term, it must be kept safely, for example in a garage or under a cover. This reduces the risk of hazardous substances leaking into soil and water.

Also think about your neighbors – improperly stored cars can be considered littering and a disturbance. The assessment depends on factors such as:

  • whether the area is visible to the public,
  • how many vehicles are stored there,
  • whether they are stored in an orderly way or scattered,
  • the condition of the vehicles,
  • whether other waste is also present on the site.
