Review your waste management
Make sure that waste bins are intact and can be properly closed.
Waste storage areas should be difficult for rats to access.
Compost in a way that prevents rats from reaching food waste.
If rats cannot find food, they will not stay.
Keep the area clean and tidy
Keep your property well maintained. Rats often live in the ground and seek shelter under bushes, boards or similar.
Do not store firewood, furniture or other items close to the house.
Remove clutter and anything that may provide shelter for rats.
Avoid leaving food on the ground
Do not leave out food that can end up on the ground, for example for birds.
Pick up fallen fruit.
If you keep animals outdoors, make sure their food is not accessible to rats. Clean regularly and remove leftover food from cages.
Who is responsible?
The property owner is responsible for preventing pest problems and arranging pest control if needed. This applies to homes, premises and other properties.
If you live in a detached or terraced house, pest control is often included in your home insurance.
Contact your insurance company before ordering pest control services.
