Overview
Boden Municipality owns just over 2,700 hectares of land. Of this, just over 1,300 hectares are production forest. Many areas are also used as outdoor recreation close to housing.
Governance and responsibility
The municipality manages its forests to create safe, pleasant, and sustainable environments. The work follows a forest management plan that specifies where and when different actions take place – such as logging, clearing, and planting.
- The Parks Unit is responsible for forests near built-up areas, within detailed development plan zones.
- The Physical Planning Unit manages the other forests used for timber production.
Management and care
Harvesting and thinning
Large harvests are sold standing. Smaller interventions, thinning and planting are carried out manually by municipal staff.
Nature and water protection
- Retaining habitat trees and dead wood where suitable to support plants and animals.
- Protecting soil and water with buffer zones and avoiding rutting and ground damage.
- Preserving sight lines and a sense of safety near homes and paths.
Timing of works
Heavy works are planned to reduce disturbance to outdoor recreation and nature. During ongoing works we post signs and, when needed, cordon off areas.
Hazardous trees
Trees that pose an immediate danger to people or property are felled without delay.
Production and climate benefits
Growing forests bind carbon dioxide and store carbon in both the forest and wood products. Active management creates more resilient stands and reduces the risk of storm damage and disease.
What you can expect
Accessible paths and meeting places for recreation, forests with varied ages and species, and clear information when work is in progress.
Be considerate in the forest
- Follow signage and do not enter cordoned areas.
- Keep a safe distance from machines and staff.
- Do not leave garden waste in the forest.
- Take your litter home.
Urban-adjacent recreation areas
Gruvberget and Åberget are valuable, close-to-town forests. Here we prioritise the experience for both children and adults who use the areas.
Examples of actions
- Clearing and maintenance along trails and paths.
- Selective harvesting to improve light, visibility and safety.
- Care of rest areas and viewpoints.
- Supplementary planting where needed.
