How to manage garden waste
Garden waste includes leaves, grass clippings, hedge cuttings, fallen fruit, weeds, branches, twigs and moss.
You can manage the waste in two ways:
- Compost at home – create soil in an environmentally friendly way. Do not mix in kitchen waste.
- Bring it to the recycling center – in Boden (Brännkläppen) and Harads. These facilities also accept stumps, trunks and logs.
Burning garden waste is not allowed. Dumping waste in forests, waterways or other places is considered littering and may be reported to the police.
Why you must not dump garden waste
When garden waste is left in nature, several problems occur:
- Leaf piles grow over time and attract other, potentially hazardous waste.
- Nutrient leakage causes overgrowth of nettles and raspberry thickets.
- Nutrients in waterways can lead to oxygen depletion and blocked water flow.
- Piled waste against tree trunks damages roots and makes trees vulnerable to fungi, which increases the risk of trees falling.
Invasive alien species
Alien species are plants, animals or microorganisms moved outside their natural environment. Most cause no harm, but some spread aggressively and damage ecosystems. These are called invasive alien species.
You can help prevent their spread:
- Do not release or leave these species in nature.
- Report findings in public areas via invasivaarter.nu.
EU-listed invasive alien species
- Himalayan balsam
- Giant hogweed
- Tromsø hogweed
- Curly waterweed
Other species to report in Sweden
- Garden lupine
- Japanese knotweed
- Floating pennywort
- Japanese rose
Everyone can help stop invasive alien species – even individual actions make a big difference.
