Easier sorting close to home

What is near-home sorting?

Near-home sorting is a new way to sort packaging close to your home. It means that if you live in a house, townhouse or holiday home, you will in the future be able to sort more packaging directly at your property.

The aim is to make sorting easier and to ensure that more packaging is recycled instead of being thrown away as residual waste.

Why is near-home sorting being introduced?

Today, more than half of all packaging is thrown into residual waste and burned, even though it can be recycled.

This change is based on EU waste legislation and new Swedish law. The new law means that municipalities are responsible for collecting packaging waste from households.

How the sorting will work

With near-home sorting, you will receive a new two-compartment bin (370 litres) where you sort:

  • food waste
  • plastic packaging

You will continue to use your existing bins:

  • green bin – paper packaging
  • brown bin – residual waste

The new two-compartment bin will be used together with the bins you already have.

Recycling stations will remain for now. There you can leave:

  • glass packaging
  • metal packaging
  • larger packaging

The system will be introduced step by step and adapted to local conditions in Boden.

How near-home sorting affects you

The system will be introduced step by step during 2027. You will receive information about the exact timing for your household by letter and on the municipality’s website.

What do you need to do?

You do not need to do anything right now. The municipality will provide more information and prepare for the change before it is introduced.

However, it may be helpful to start thinking about where to place your bins. Do not build a new permanent space for the bins yet, as there may be more bins in the future.

Questions and answers

Near-home sorting is part of a national requirement that all municipalities in Sweden must follow from 1 January 2027. It is a new system for collecting packaging close to your home. The aim is to increase recycling and reduce the amount of packaging in residual waste.

Today, more than half of all packaging ends up in residual waste instead of being recycled. Near-home sorting makes it easier for you as a homeowner to sort correctly and helps Sweden meet its recycling targets.

Yes. Near-home sorting is mandatory for all municipalities in Sweden. All households and holiday homes covered by property-close collection of packaging must follow the national requirements.

Yes, holiday homes are included in the same national rules. The system will be introduced step by step. More information about bin delivery will be provided later.

You will receive a new two-compartment bin (370 litres) for food waste and plastic packaging. You will keep your existing green and brown bins.

Your existing green and brown bins will continue to be used. The green bin is for paper packaging. The brown bin is for residual waste.

The new two-compartment bin is for food waste and plastic packaging.

From the start, paper and plastic packaging are included.

  • Two-compartment binCompartment 2 – Plastic packaging: plastic bottles, containers, trays, bread bags and plastic filmBrown bin – Residual waste: nappies, vacuum cleaner bags, dish brushes, snus, cotton buds, and other waste that cannot be recycled or sorted as food waste or packaging.

  • Compartment 1 – Food waste: food scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper towels, and small amounts of food waste in a compostable bag.

Newspapers should be taken to a recycling station, as before.

Boden will gradually move to a system with two new bins. The system is introduced step by step, taking both financial and environmental factors into account.

No. All households will receive the same type of two-compartment bin for food and plastic packaging. Current options for choosing different bins will change, as all households must sort in the same way to meet legal requirements.

If your bin is damaged, you should report it. A broken two-compartment bin will be replaced with a new one. If the damage is due to misuse (for example, if the bin has been left out by the road or overfilled), a fee may be charged.

Yes, you will receive a new two-compartment bin in addition to your existing green and brown bins. We will provide more information about the exact sizes at a later stage.

Collection will follow the regular schedule. Food waste and plastic packaging will be collected every two weeks during the summer months.

Collection intervals may change as needs become clearer.

Consider how well you are sorting your packaging. The goal is to reduce the amount of residual waste. If your bins become full between collections, you can leave packaging at a recycling station or order an extra collection for a fee.

Bins will be delivered step by step during 2027. You will be informed of the exact timing by letter and on the municipality’s website.

Yes. Waste that is not included in near-home sorting (such as metal and glass packaging) should still be taken to a recycling station. Recycling stations will also remain for larger packaging.

With the introduction of near-home sorting, recycling stations may change in form. Larger packaging and materials not included in near-home sorting, as well as metal and glass, will still be collected there.

Our goal is that near-home sorting will not affect the waste collection fee. This requires everyone to help by sorting more packaging.

Yes, you will receive the new bin at no cost.

The bins are designed to work all year round. Collection will take place as usual. Any disruptions will be communicated via the website or the Mitt Boden app.

A fee may be charged for incorrect sorting. If you are unsure how to sort your waste, you can find guidance at sopor.nu.

Near-home sorting ensures that everyone sorts in the same way, which makes recycling more efficient and helps meet national targets. If you already sort your waste, the new system will make it even easier.
