Please note that all forms, digital applications (e-services) and some linked websites are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

Collection days and schedule

The waste truck collects your waste according to the current schedule. The truck has one compartment for food waste (brown bin) and one for combustible residual waste (green bin). It runs on biogas to reduce emissions.

Enter your address on boden.se to see your collection day for waste or septic tanks. Place bins out the evening before collection day.

Avoid missed collection

Leave bins out if they were not emptied on the scheduled day. If collection has not taken place within 24 hours, report the issue via the municipality’s e-services, the app Felanmälan Bodens kommun, or Citizen Services.

How to place your bins

Place bins at the property boundary with handles and wheels facing your property. If collection cannot take place at the boundary, move bins to the designated spot with handles and wheels facing away from the road.

  • Keep bins at least 50 cm from hedges, bushes, mailboxes, and from each other. The ground must be flat and at road level.
  • Ensure clearance from branches: minimum height 4.7 meters for the truck’s lifting arm.
  • Do not overfill bins. Waste must be in sealed bags.

How to sort at home

First, consider if the item is packaging. Then sort by material. All packaging of plastic (rigid or soft), paper, glass, and metal must be left at the nearest recycling station. There are 36 stations in Boden, you can see a map on sopor.nu.

Use the green bin for combustible residual waste such as sanitary products, diapers, envelopes, worn-out dish brushes, and paper towels.

For guidance, see Boden’s sorting page.

Food waste – rules, bags, and winter tips

It has been mandatory to separate food waste in Boden since 1998. It is now a legal requirement throughout Sweden. Place food waste in designated food waste bags or paper bags in the brown bin. Food waste is turned into biogas and fertilizer.

  • Two rolls of compostable food waste bags are distributed once per year and are intended only for food waste. Used correctly, they last one year.Tenants in multi-family housing who lack food waste bags should contact their landlord.
  • Food waste bags are perishable and have a best-before date. If your bags break easily, they are likely too old. Store them in a cool, dark place. Use a ventilated container to keep the bag dry. Double bags are not necessary.
  • Do not use a sealed container that makes the bag damp, as this causes decomposition to start already in your kitchen.
  • Tenants in multi-family housing who lack food waste bags should contact their landlord.

Extra bags can be collected when needed at Citizen Services in City Hall or at Boden’s recycling centers.

Put an egg carton or newspaper at the bottom of the bin. Pre-freeze food waste bags outdoors in a bucket with a lid before placing them in the bin. Mix wet waste with some paper towel.

If waste is frozen, the property owner must loosen it. Once loose, you can order an extra collection (fee applies) or place an additional bag marked “Food Waste” at the next collection.

You may compost food waste at home after notifying and receiving approval from the Environment and Building Committee. When approved, the food waste bin is collected by the municipality or can be dropped off at the Brännkläppen recycling center.

The food waste bin fee is then removed from your invoice.

Common requests and issue reporting

Report damaged bins via e-services, the Felanmälan Bodens kommun app, or Citizen Services. Cracked bins are replaced if we can't empty them. Loose lids are repaired or replaced.

Order larger or smaller bins via e-services. The cost is added to your next invoice. You can also request longer collection intervals. Find current prices here.

Leave bins out. If not emptied within 24 hours, report via e-services, the app, or Citizen Services.

Request via e-services, the app, or Citizen Services. If your bin often overflows, sort more thoroughly or switch to a larger bin.

Collect them at Citizen Services in City Hall or at Boden’s recycling centers. Avoid overuse, as it increases costs and can lead to higher fees.

A waste collection subscription is always linked to a property. When moving, you must file a moving notice for water and waste services so the subscription transfers to the new owner.

Do this via e-services or Citizen Services. Subscriptions cannot be canceled simply because you do not want waste collection.

Bulky waste and landfill waste – annual collection

Once per year, the municipality collects bulky and landfill waste from single-family homes, after registration via e-services. Place items where you usually place bins during the designated week.

You may leave up to three items that one person can load onto the truck. Smaller items up to 15 kg should be in a bag or box. Mark items with “Bulky Waste” and place at the driveway or bin location.

The cost is included in the basic waste fee for single- and two-family homes.

Bulky, broken, and worn-out items not suitable for household bins, such as furniture, skis, toys, strollers, tools, bicycles, or grills. Remember that one person’s trash may be another’s treasure.

Hazardous waste (chemicals, batteries, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes), electronic waste, construction waste (carpet, sanitary porcelain, boilers, windows), tires, car parts, motorcycles, mopeds, lawnmowers, excavation waste, garden waste, farm equipment, commercial waste, or items under producer responsibility (packaging, paper, electronics, tires).

Glass or sharp waste must be securely packaged. You may also bring bulky waste yourself to a recycling center.

Mineral wool insulation, glass wool insulation, mirror glass.

Do not include hazardous waste, electronic waste, packaging, combustible residual waste, or food waste.

Hazardous waste and electronic waste

Take hazardous waste and electronics to the nearest recycling center. Electronics can also be left at Savo, Gjutvägen 10. Reusable electronics can be donated to secondhand stores or Boden’s reuse facility at the recycling center.

Fees and subscription

  • Waste management is funded by a fee set by the municipal council.
  • The fee consists of a fixed basic charge and a variable charge. The basic charge covers customer service, information, administration, recycling centers, and bulky waste handling.
  • The variable charge depends on your waste volume, bin size, and collection frequency.
  • The basic charge must always be paid. Court rulings confirm that waste is always generated on a property.

Yes. Regulations ensure waste is handled safely for the environment, people, and animals. If you generate little waste, choose the smallest bin and the longest allowed interval.

For holiday homes, you can apply for exemption or suspension if no waste is generated. The basic charge still applies.

If you use the property, a bin for combustible waste is mandatory. A food waste bin may be excluded if you have an approved home composting permit.

By law, the municipality must collect waste at the property, and property owners must deliver waste to the designated collection point.

A subscription is linked to the property. When selling, you must file a moving notice for water and waste services via the e-services or through Citizen Services. A subscription cannot be canceled simply because waste collection is not desired.

Exemptions and suspension from waste regulations

If you have a holiday home or a property not in use, you may apply for exemption or suspension. Apply to the Environment and Building Committee. An application fee applies. In 2025, the fee is 1,237 SEK, charged even if not approved.

What you can apply for

  • Suspension of collection at permanent homes: property unused for at least four consecutive months. Apply two months in advance.
  • Suspension at holiday homes: property unused during the entire collection season (week 20–43). Apply between January 1 and March 31 of the year concerned. Suspension allowed for up to three years.
  • Own waste management at occasional use: apply at least two months before planned period.

The basic charge – why it always applies

Waste management is not funded by taxes but by a fee set by the municipal council.
The fee includes a fixed basic charge and a variable part. The basic charge covers customer service, information, administration, recycling centers, and bulky waste handling.

The basic charge always applies. Court rulings confirm that some waste is always generated on properties. The variable part depends on your sorting, bin size, and frequency.

Waste collection with little waste or holiday homes

Collection is mandatory even if you produce little waste. Rules protect the environment, people, and animals. Inspections are done by local environmental authorities, county administrations, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

With little waste, choose the smallest bin and longest interval. Apply via e-services or Citizen Services. For holiday homes, apply for exemption or suspension if no waste is generated. An application fee applies. The basic charge must always be paid.

Multi-family housing

Property owners are responsible for ensuring that residents can dispose of bulky waste properly.
