Why is the survey carried out?
Within about one kilometer of the Lule River there are many properties without access to the municipal sewage system. These small private sewage systems can pollute both Boden’s and Luleå’s main water sources, as well as private wells and bathing waters.
To reduce the risks, the Environment and Building Committee is surveying all properties in the area. The survey is carried out in five stages, with about 200 properties in each stage.
How the survey is conducted
Properties affected are notified about one year in advance. Before the survey, a questionnaire is sent out where property owners describe the water and sewage conditions on their property.
Is your system green, yellow, or red?
When the municipality assesses private sewage systems, three colors are used:
- Green system: Approved, functional, and with a permit. No action needed.
- Yellow system: Deficient, for example old or with low performance. Should be improved.
- Red system: Lacking a permit or treatment. Must be corrected.
If your system is yellow or red, you as the property owner are responsible for correcting the deficiencies. This means contacting the Environment and Building Committee, applying for a permit, and improving or building a new system.
Taking a system out of use
If you no longer plan to use your sewage system, you must notify the Environment and Building Committee. The system must be emptied one final time, disconnected, and the land restored. You must document the measures with photos and written information. Once the municipality has approved the work, the system is removed from the emptying register.
