Why water protection areas exist
The purpose is to protect water resources that are important for drinking water supply. The rules ensure that both we and future generations have access to clean and healthy water.
When you live in a water protection area
Special rules apply in water protection areas to safeguard drinking water. This means that certain activities may require a permit, while others are not allowed.
Activities that may require a permit:
- Drilling for geothermal heating.
- Excavation or earthworks.
- New sewage systems.
- Storage of oil, chemicals, or flammable substances.
Activities that may be prohibited:
- Use of pesticides.
- Storage of hazardous waste in the ground.
- Installation of new private wells for water supply.
- Certain types of sewage solutions.
Kusön water protection area
Kusön is the largest water source in Boden. Protection regulations were established by Länsstyrelsen (the County Administrative Board) in 2010. The area has different protection zones (primary, secondary, and tertiary), with stricter rules the closer you are to the water source.
Important to know in the Kusön area
- New private wells for water supply are prohibited.
- Storage of petroleum products above 250 liters requires protective measures and often a permit.
- Forestry may not store timber or carry out certain activities without notification.
- Roads and parking areas may not be built with asphalt or oil-treated materials in the most sensitive zones.
- Sewage systems must be particularly secure and may not discharge untreated water.
