Hosting summer workers

As an employer, you can host young people for summer jobs. This gives support to your operations and helps open the door for youth to the labor market.

Who can host summer workers?

All registered employers can host summer workers, including:

  • Municipal operations
  • Associations
  • Private companies

Employers must:

  • Provide relevant tasks for the whole workday and period.
  • Offer guidance and supervision; working alone is not allowed.
  • Follow occupational health and safety laws and regulations.
  • Have no debts with the Swedish Enforcement Authority.
  • Have a collective agreement and be approved by the relevant trade union.

Financial support for private companies

Private companies that host summer workers receive financial support from the municipality. The support corresponds to the hourly wage that would have been paid to the young person in a municipal job, excluding social security contributions.

Employers must always pay the contractual wage according to their sector’s agreement, even if the municipal support does not cover all costs. The support can be claimed after the work period ends, no later than September 30.

How does summer work function?

  • A young person can work for three weeks during one of the three summer periods.
  • The municipality assigns the workplaces.
  • The employer carries the full employer responsibility.

Working hours

  • Municipality and private companies: 6–8 hours per day, maximum 120 hours.
  • Associations: 6 hours per day, maximum 90 hours.
  • Associations may apply for 8-hour workdays if there are enough tasks every day of the chosen periods.

Rules for working hours

  • No work on Midsummer’s Eve.
  • No work between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
  • At least a 30-minute unpaid lunch break if the workday is longer than 4.5 hours.
  • At least 36 consecutive hours of rest each week.
