Storage and handling of manure and sludge

The environmental impact of agriculture comes partly from the handling of manure, chemical pesticides, and fuels.

Updated:

Please note that all forms and digital applications (e-services) are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.

1. Start early

Plan ahead before you begin storing or handling manure and sludge. This is especially important if you use temporary storage (field stacking or composting) or handle large volumes. Contact the Environment and Building Unit in advance if you are unsure about the regulations or how your storage should be arranged.

2. costs

The monitoring of manure and sludge management is regulated within the municipality’s inspection activities. Usually, no special application is required, but the municipality may charge an inspection fee — either at the time of inspection or annually.

3. Processing time

In most cases, no formal application is required, so there is no fixed processing time. If the municipality needs to review your activities, this is done as part of regular environmental inspections. Contact a case officer if you want more information about your specific situation.

4. Important to know

  • Do not spread manure on frozen, snow-covered, or waterlogged ground.
  • Always keep at least 10 meters from open ditches, streams, and lakes.
  • Keep at least 50 meters from private drinking water wells.
  • Do not spread natural manure closer than 50 meters from Buddbyträsket, Bodträsket, Svartbyträsket, or Vittjärvsträsket.

For temporary storage or composting (field stacking):

  • Place the pile to avoid flooding, water leakage, and soil damage.
  • Cover the pile if it remains after October 1.
  • Do not leave it in the same place for more than one year.
  • The same location cannot be used more than once every five years.

5. Submit your application

In most cases, no application is required for the storage and handling of manure and sludge. However, for larger operations or if you are unsure, always contact the Environment and Building Unit for advice.

6. What happens next

The municipality follows up through regular environmental inspections. This may include annual inspections or additional visits if there is a suspicion that regulations are not being followed. Any inspection fees are charged according to the applicable fee schedule.

7. Other things to consider

Depending on the scope of your activities, you may also need:

  • Notification for environmentally hazardous activities
  • Permit for the use of chemical pesticides
  • Notification for food-related activities (for example, handling silage)

Contact the municipality if you are unsure about which regulations apply to your situation.
