Put up a sign
If you want to put up a sign or lighting installation within an area covered by a local development plan, you must apply for a building permit. This applies to both advertising signs and signs for shops and businesses.

Step-by-step guide
Please note that all forms and digital applications (e-services) are currently in Swedish. Contact Citizen Service if you need help in English.
1. Start early
Putting up a sign can mean that you:
- Mount it on a building, fence, wall, or similar structure.
- Place it freestanding on the ground.
- Raise it on a flagpole.
Moving a sign means relocating an existing sign.
Significantly changing a sign means altering its size or appearance, such as text, color, or brightness. In these cases, you must apply for a sign permit. The municipality decides whether a change is significant enough to require a permit.
You do not need a building permit for a sign if it:
- Is no larger than 1.0 m².
- Advertises a temporary event and is up for no more than four weeks.
- Is an orientation board up to 2.0 m².
- Is placed indoors.
- Is political campaign material during an election or referendum.
- Is a national flag, municipal flag, or similar.
- Is a road sign or other traffic sign according to traffic regulations.
- Is a navigation sign or safety device for maritime traffic.
These exemptions do not apply if the sign is in an area of special historical, cultural, environmental, or artistic value. Always contact the municipality before ordering, changing, or putting up a sign.
For advertising signs along roads outside local development plan areas, you must apply for a permit from Länsstyrelsen (the County Administrative Board). This also applies to signs placed on trailers.
2. costs
You pay for processing your application. The cost depends on the type of application and the impact of the sign on its surroundings.
3. Processing time
According to the Planning and Building Act, you must receive a decision within 10 weeks after all documents have been submitted.
The Environment and Building Committee may extend the processing time once, but it may never exceed 20 weeks. The municipality’s goal is to make a decision within 5 weeks.
4. Important to know
Always get permission from the property owner before putting up a sign, unless you own the property yourself.
