What debt restructuring is and how it works
Debt restructuring is for people with such large debts that they cannot repay them for many years. For a set period, usually five years, you live on a minimum amount that covers only necessary living costs. The rest goes toward repaying your debts. When the period ends, the debts included in the plan are written off.
You apply through the Swedish Enforcement Authority. You must provide details about your income, expenses, assets, and debts. The authority reviews your situation and decides if you qualify for debt restructuring.
During the process, you live at a subsistence level. In some cases, additional funds may be granted for essential costs, such as medicine or childcare.
Who can get debt restructuring
You may apply for debt restructuring if you:
- Have such large debts that you cannot repay them within a foreseeable time (long-term insolvency)
- Have already tried to resolve the situation yourself, for example by contacting creditors or using financial counseling
- Are registered as a resident in Sweden and do not have a current business prohibition
- Have not previously been granted debt restructuring (exceptions can sometimes be made depending on circumstances)
Debt restructuring for entrepreneurs
People who run or have run a business may apply for debt restructuring. There is a special form called business debt restructuring (F-debt restructuring). It usually lasts for three years, often shorter than for private individuals.
How we can support you
The municipality’s budget and debt counseling service helps you prepare before applying. Together we review your debts and gather the necessary documents. Several meetings are often needed before an application is submitted.
The counseling is free of charge and confidential. You can receive support before, during, and after the application. If your application is rejected, you will get advice on alternative solutions.
