Why fraud is common and emotionally harmful

Most people are honest, but fraud and fraud attempts occur frequently. They can cause major financial losses. Many people feel guilt or shame if they are deceived, and this can affect both personal security and trust in society. This is especially common in manipulation fraud, where criminals trick people into cooperating themselves, often targeting older adults. Other types of fraud, such as card fraud and online ad fraud, often affect working-age people but usually involve smaller amounts and less emotional harm. Fraudsters exploit both technical weaknesses and human vulnerabilities and continuously adapt when technology becomes safer.

How you can protect yourself

Here are clear and practical tips:

  • Hang up if you feel unsafe during a phone call
If someone you do not know calls and you feel pressured or stressed, hang up immediately.
  • Do not click on unknown links and never share your passwords
Practice safe browsing. Only use passwords in trusted environments.
  • Report suspicious invoices or misleading information to the police
If you receive an invoice you did not approve, or if you feel deceived, file a police report.
  • Dispute invoices you have not approved right away
If you respond in time, you can avoid debt collection, credit score damage, and further problems.
  • Never log in with your security token or digital ID at someone else’s request
Your bank or other trusted institutions will never call and ask you to log in or share personal details. If they do, it is fraud.

What to do if you have already been exposed

  • Always file a police report if you have received a false invoice or feel deceived.
  • Dispute false invoices quickly to avoid additional consequences.
  • Talk to a family member or someone you trust if you feel ashamed – you are not alone, and there is no reason to blame yourself.
