Municipal archive

The municipal archive preserves the municipality’s records from 1863 onwards. Here you can find documents, photos, and other information that tells the story of Boden.

What can you find in the municipal archive?

The municipal archive contains records from Överluleå Rural Municipality (1863–1966), Edefors Rural Municipality (1891–1970), Boden Municipal Community (1898–1918), Boden City (1919–1970) and Boden Municipality (from 1971 onwards).

The archive includes, among other things:

  • Minutes from the city council and municipal committees
  • Building permit drawings
  • School records
  • Electoral rolls
  • Correspondence and reports
  • Financial records and printed materials
  • Photographs

Documents less than ten years old are usually kept by the respective department.

Some records, such as social services cases or student health records, are confidential. Access is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Digital photo archive

The Municipal Archives also contain a digital photo archive featuring historical photographs from Boden and the surrounding area. Here you can search for places, people, activities and decades – or simply browse images that capture everyday life, urban development and moments from Boden’s history.

Historical background

The municipal archive reflects the development of Boden:

  • 1863: Överluleå Rural Municipality is established.
  • 1891: Edefors becomes its own rural municipality.
  • 1898–1918: Boden becomes a municipal community.
  • 1919: Boden is granted city rights.
  • 1967: Överluleå, parts of Råneå, and Boden merge.
  • 1971: Boden Municipality in its current form is established.
