Social services department

We provide support, care, and assistance to those who need help in their daily lives due to age, disability, or social circumstances.

Our mission

The Social Services Department is responsible for providing support, care, and assistance to people who need help in their daily lives. We work on behalf of the Social Welfare Committee and follow laws such as the Social Services Act and the Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments.

Our areas of responsibility

The department is divided into three main areas and several complementary units.

Provides support for social problems, including:

  • Financial assistance
  • Concerns about substance abuse among young people
  • Support for children and young people at risk

Includes:

  • Nursing homes for people with extensive care needs
  • Dementia care homes for people with dementia
  • Assisted living facilities – a new housing option for older people who need care
  • Home care services for people of all ages living in apartments or houses

For people of all ages with disabilities. Support may include:

  • Supported housing
  • Personal assistance

  • Municipal health and medical care
  • Assistance assessment unit
  • Finance and administration

How to apply for assistance

When you apply for support, an individual assessment is made. All services require a formal decision. If you are not satisfied, you can usually appeal the decision in court.

Examples of assistance:

  • Placement in a nursing home or group home
  • Home care services
  • Support and help for parents
  • Respite care for relatives
  • Financial assistance (income support)
  • Personal assistance

Cooperation with others

We collaborate with the police, Region Norrbotten, non-profit associations, and user organizations. Within the municipality, we work especially closely with the Education Department on matters concerning children and young people.
