Before booking the ceremony
Before you can marry, you must apply for a marriage license from Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency).
Apply well in advance since the license is valid for only four months. You will receive two documents that must be submitted to the municipality no later than 14 days before the ceremony.
Foreign citizens
Special rules apply if one or both of you are foreign citizens. Contact Skatteverket for more information.
Under 18
If you are under 18, you must obtain permission from Länsstyrelsen in the county where you live before you can marry.
Booking the ceremony
A civil marriage ceremony can take place at City Hall or at another location agreed upon with the officiant. Contact the officiant to arrange the time and place.

The ceremony
Two witnesses of legal age must be present. They can be relatives or friends, or the municipality can provide witnesses if the ceremony is held at City Hall during office hours.
ID requirements
Both partners must present valid identification at the ceremony.
Language and duration
The ceremony takes about five minutes and can be held in Swedish or English. Inform the officiant when booking if someone does not understand Swedish.
Cost
A civil marriage ceremony is free of charge. If the ceremony takes place outside City Hall, the couple must pay the officiant’s travel expenses.
Changing your surname
If either spouse wishes to change their surname after the wedding, this must be reported to Skatteverket.
