Know the rules: Planning to sell coffee, food or treats this summer?
Are you thinking of opening a summer café, setting up a stall at a market, or selling homemade baked goods on Facebook? Then your business may need to be registered as a food establishment – otherwise, you risk having to pay a penalty fee.
Since January 1, 2019, new regulations under the Swedish Food Act require that anyone selling food or food products to others may need to register their business with the municipality – even if it’s just a hobby or for a short period.
"If you plan to sell, prepare, or produce food – regardless of scale – it’s always a good idea to check whether you need to register your activity. You should also contact us if you’ve arranged special facilities for food preparation, have staff helping you, and/or handle larger quantities of food," says Carl-Göran Olofsson, Environmental Inspector.
And remember – even if registration is not required, you still have to follow food safety regulations. These rules are in place to protect both you and your customers.
