New bridge connects city and nature – for runners, families, and snowmobile riders
It’s now in place: the new bridge that connects the residential neighborhoods of Södra Svartbyn with the Gruvberget outdoor recreation area. Designed for pedestrians, cyclists, and snowmobile users, it will be a key element in maintaining access to nature – even after the extensive infrastructure expansion tied to the industrial development.
During week 21, the final bridge sections were lifted into place. With that, the bridge – one of ten total bridges within the infrastructure project surrounding Boden Industrial Park – has now taken its place in the landscape.
"Outdoor recreation is a natural part of daily life for many people in Boden. This bridge helps preserve access to our recreational areas, even after the construction of new roads and railways. It’s a concrete example of how we in Boden combine community development with quality of life through our local way of living," says Magnus Åkerlund, Chief Executive of the Municipality of Boden.
A Bridge for All Seasons
Spanning the new railway, the bridge forms a natural connection between residential areas and nearby nature. In winter, it enables snowmobile access to Gruvberget, a popular destination for excursions, cross-country skiing, and outdoor activities. During the warmer months, the same route is used by joggers, families with children, cyclists, and dog owners – leading directly from the homes in Södra Svartbyn into the calm of the forest.
"This is a major milestone for the entire project. We’ve been looking forward to getting this bridge in place for a long time," says Max Havama, Project Manager at Polar Structure, which is building the infrastructure for Boden Industrial Park.
Part of a Larger Whole
The bridge is expected to open in the fall and is one of ten bridges being constructed in the area. Some are designed to ensure safe crossings between roads and railways, while others – like this one – make it easier for people to move between the city and the outdoors.
"All the bridges have now been cast. What remains are final touches before we can complete the road and railway," says Max Havama.
The new infrastructure corridor, which will connect Boden Industrial Park with the Malmbanan railway, is being completed in stages. The railway is expected to be finished by the turn of the year 2025/2026.
