Temporary contractor housing planned at Moråsen

Stegra and the Municipality of Boden are planning to enable temporary contractor housing with 712 beds in the Moråsen area of Boden. A preliminary decision has been approved, allowing work to begin.

There is a continued need for temporary contractor housing in Boden. So far, Stegra has built accommodations at Nylandsbäcken, Slipvägen 1, and at Boden Business Park/Sävast. Together, these facilities currently offer approximately 1,500 beds. Around 3,000 people are currently working in Boden Industrial Park, and more are expected to arrive. This puts pressure on the housing market and highlights the importance of providing areas that meet the municipality’s requirements for standard, maintenance, and oversight.

Both Stegra and the municipality have been working to find additional options to quickly relieve the pressure on the existing housing market.

Moråsen has previously been considered as an option, but areas with existing infrastructure were prioritized. There was also an intention to integrate the temporary housing with existing residential areas.

The site is located along road 356, just outside Boden in the direction of Svartbjörnsbyn and Buddbyn (see red marker on the map).

"The area is relatively close to Boden Industrial Park and therefore does not add to traffic in the city center. Our hope is that this will be a strong solution that adds more temporary housing meeting the municipality’s standards while relieving pressure on the regular housing market, says Gabriella Snell," project manager at the Municipality of Boden.

Groundwork will begin as soon as possible, with occupancy planned for the latter part of the fall.

The housing units planned for installation at Moråsen are already pre-fabricated and reusable, sourced from Skellefteå. This brings advantages in terms of cost, sustainability, and time efficiency.

"We want to continue doing what we can to avoid temporary workers involved in constructing our facility from occupying available permanent housing that our own staff may need," says Anne Graf, Head of Public Affairs for Stegra in Boden.

According to a political decision made in 2021, the Municipality of Boden is to provide land and temporary building permits for up to 3,000 temporary housing units. The aim is to ease pressure on the regular housing market and ensure consistent standards for location, maintenance, and quality across all accommodations. Construction, upkeep, and post-use restoration of the sites are the responsibility of Stegra.

The temporary contractor housing is intended solely for workers who are in Boden temporarily. Those staying for longer periods are referred to permanent housing and are encouraged to register as residents of the Municipality of Boden.
