Local safety points being established
The Municipality of Boden is developing safety points to strengthen preparedness in the event of crises or war. This work is being carried out in close collaboration with civil society and is part of the broader preparedness efforts currently underway across the country.
Safety in the event of societal disruptions begins locally. During the spring, the Municipality of Boden has initiated work to develop safety points – physical meeting places where residents can turn during major crises such as prolonged power outages, communication disruptions, or other emergencies.
As a first step, the municipality has chosen to build on three already established service points in Unbyn/Avan, Gunnarsbyn, and Harads. These are run in cooperation with the local economic associations UNEK, RÅEK, and EDEK and serve as natural meeting places in each area. Through three local workshops, the municipality, together with the associations and engaged residents, has started to shape the content of the future safety points.
Since Unbyn/Avan and Gunnarsbyn are located near the municipal border, representatives from Luleå Municipality have also participated in the discussions – an important aspect when cross-municipality cooperation can be crucial during a major societal crisis.
The municipality has also held a separate workshop with Boden’s Rural Council, where the purpose and function of the safety points were discussed.
“Local resources, contacts, and experiences are crucial for effective preparedness. We want to establish places where people feel welcome, safe, and can receive support", says Disa Kristinsdottir, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at the Municipality of Boden.
The safety points are intended to offer, for example, hot drinks, children’s activities, emotional support, the possibility to charge mobile phones, assistance with transportation, distribution of warm clothing, and up-to-date crisis information. In addition, there will be first aid kits, toilets, lighting, and guidance to important societal functions such as pharmacies, shelters, and healthcare.
More Safety Points to Come
Starting in the rural areas has been a strategic choice, but safety points are needed throughout the municipality. Work is now continuing to plan safety points in the urban area as well, particularly in the city centre. The conditions there differ from those in rural areas, but the needs are equally important. Starting in areas where established service points already exist has provided valuable lessons for the continued development work.
“We know that people want to help when something happens. The safety points will become a gathering place for both support and community engagement,” says Disa Kristinsdottir.
