Sturegården in Boden certified as antibiotic-smart elderly care

The dementia care unit at Sturegården has become the first unit in Boden Municipality — and one of the first in Sweden — to be certified as Antibiotic-Smart Elderly and Disability Care.

“Thanks to our staff’s shared approach and careful adherence to basic hygiene routines, we’ve reached this milestone. We have fantastic teamwork at Sturegården, where all our care staff, nurses, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and unit managers work together every day to maintain high quality in everything we do,” says Ellinor Boström, unit manager.

Linda Björkman, also a unit manager, highlights the strong team spirit as a key to success:

“We’re a small and close-knit team, which makes it easy to establish good routines in our daily work. Everyone helps each other, and we work really well together.”

An important part of this work has also been Sturegården’s three hygiene ambassadors, who drive preventive efforts every day. They support colleagues, follow up on routines, and ensure that hygiene practices remain an active part of daily operations.

The certification is proof that Sturegården is actively working to prevent infections, reduce the need for antibiotics, and contribute to sustainable healthcare.

Being an antibiotic-smart care provider means inspiring colleagues, care recipients, and relatives to take responsibility for reducing the spread of infection, preventing healthcare-associated infections, and using antibiotics responsibly.

Behind the Antibiotic Smart Sweden initiative are organisations such as the Public Health Agency of Sweden, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Strama, and ReAct. Together, they work toward the vision of a society where antibiotics continue to save lives.
