Culture and cinema return to Medborgarhuset
Medborgarhuset is once again full of life. During Kulturnatta, the cinema reopened, and since then the venue has hosted daytime screenings, autumn break cinema, dance events, concerts, and galas, alongside activities from the School of Culture and other local organisers.
Medborgarhuset is a central meeting place — both geographically and culturally — in Boden. In January, Boden Municipality took over the operation of the building, which not only houses the Saga Cinema, but also stages and conference rooms in Forum and Rondo. The facilities are used extensively by the municipal School of Culture and Boden Culture Crew. Other regular organisers include Boden’s branch of the National Touring Theatre Association, Boden Event, Bodenarr, and Dans i Nord. The Eldsjälsgalan 2025 (Local Hero Awards) was also recently held at the Saga Theatre and the adjacent Bodensia, and most recently, a children’s culture festival took place at Medborgarhuset.
A new cinema screen
At the heart of Medborgarhuset is Saga Cinema, which has delighted generations of Boden residents over the years. Since the long-awaited new screen was installed, Saga has shown a wide variety of films. During the autumn school break, several films were screened each day, and the season continues with an exciting mix of family films, romance, comedy, thrillers, and horror.
“It feels great to be up and running again. We’ve also hired more staff now,” says Fredrik Larsson, operations coordinator at Medborgarhuset.
Daytime cinema
One very popular initiative is the daytime cinema, which runs every other Wednesday at 14:00 and welcomes anyone free during the day.
“We offer a slightly lower ticket price than usual and also have a stamp card — if you come ten times, the eleventh screening is free,” says Fredrik.
Daytime cinema has been running for many years and is tailored to its regular audience.
“I put together this season’s daytime programme myself so we could get started quickly, but I’m happy to take suggestions from visitors for future screenings,” Fredrik adds.
Fredrik has worked in the building for many years and has a real passion for film. His commitment to the cinema runs deep.
“It’s great that so many people come to the daytime screenings, and I hope it keeps growing,” he says.
The first daytime screening this autumn attracted 90 visitors, and at times there have been over 200 attendees.
“We often go to the daytime cinema — it’s so nice that it’s running again, and perfect that it’s during the day,” says Viveca Bergdahl, who attended with Ragnvald and Sylvi Tiensuu and around sixty other visitors.

Film club
In Boden, there is also Boden Film Studio, an association open to everyone aged 15 and older.
The Film Studio screens films from around the world for its members, who together select and review the movies they watch.
“The Film Studio shows six films each term – twelve per year – and is now up and running again,” says Fredrik.
