Boden signs the Climate Contract 2030

On Friday, the municipality of Boden signed the Climate Contract 2030 as part of the national initiative Climate-Neutral Cities 2030 and Viable Cities. It is a collaboration between municipalities, authorities, researchers, and organizations in society, aimed at reducing climate impact.

Boden is one of 48 locations in Sweden participating in efforts to strengthen, not just the city of Boden itself, but the entire municipality, together with other municipalities, authorities, and Viable Cities. The Climate Contract 2030 is an important tool and a process to build capacity and accelerate the transition to climate-neutral cities by 2030.

"It is a great joy for me and for all of us in Boden to be one of the municipalities in Sweden coming together to work for a sustainable future. Signing the Climate Contract on behalf of our municipality is not the starting point for our already ongoing transition work, but a clear commitment to our roadmap forward. To be able to prioritize actions, we must steer and lead in the right direction while both creating and sharing the knowledge needed, as the entire society is required. I look forward to the work ahead," says Béatrice Öman (S), Chair of the Municipal Executive Board in Boden, who signed the Climate Contract last Friday.

Boden has ambitious goals when it comes to climate action and societal transition, and a well-established culture of collaboration among a variety of stakeholders. Many of these stakeholders have joined the Climate-Neutral Cities 2030 partnership.

The local coordinator is Elin Lindahl, Environmental Strategist at Boden Municipality’s Community Planning Department. In concrete terms, Climate-Neutral Cities 2030 means:

"There are many of us who want to contribute to the transition, and an important aspect of Viable Cities’ approach is that the entire municipality is included — politicians, businesses, civil servants, citizens, and more. This aligns closely with Boden Municipality’s vision for the ongoing societal transition. The Climate-Neutral Cities 2030 initiative provides us with an important platform and a strong network of actors for our local transition work," says Elin Lindahl.

Through the Climate Contract 2030, cities (municipalities and their partners), authorities, and Viable Cities work together to accelerate the local transition journey. The contract is signed annually by the highest political leaders in the cities, directors-general of the authorities, and Viable Cities, demonstrating both locally and internationally that they are taking the lead and making the transition easier for many more.
