Military transports and exercises affect Boden
During spring 2026, military transports and exercises will take place in northern Sweden. In Boden, this means increased military presence and transports on public roads, which may periodically affect traffic flow and accessibility.
The transports mainly involve Swedish military units participating in exercises in Finland, but in some cases also allied forces from other NATO countries.
How does this affect me?
You may see military personnel and military vehicles on roads in and around Boden, including in areas where they are not normally present. Military transports and exercises may periodically affect traffic flow and lead to longer travel times. Personnel transports to and from Luleå Airport may also occur.
When does military activity take place in Boden?
January–mid-February - Occasional military transports pass through the area. Limited impact on traffic.
Mid-February–late February - Increased military presence in Boden in connection with exercises and inbound transports from the south. Traffic may be affected at times.
Early March - A larger volume of transports from Boden towards southern Tornedalen and the Finnish border. Traffic flow on certain roads may be more affected than usual. Personnel transports to and from Luleå Airport may also occur.
Late March - A limited number of transports in a southbound direction. Short-term traffic impacts may occur.
For security reasons, the Swedish Armed Forces cannot provide detailed information in advance about exact times or routes. These transports are part of Sweden’s responsibilities as a NATO ally and contribute to security in our surrounding region.
What should I keep in mind?
- Show consideration in traffic. Do not break a military convoy – if you catch up to one, stay behind it and keep a safe distance.
- Pay attention to road signs and follow current traffic information, for example via radio.
- It is prohibited and dangerous to enter military training areas when they are closed for exercises.
- Flying drones over protected sites with photography or recording restrictions is prohibited under the Protective Security Act.
- Avoid photographing or sharing images of military vehicles or activities.
The activities of the Swedish Armed Forces are of interest to foreign intelligence services. Be alert to anything that appears unusual. Suspected ongoing criminal activity should be reported immediately to the Police by calling 112. Other observations can be reported via 114 14 or through the Swedish Police website.
